The Cement Masons Apprentice Program is a three year program consisting of 3,000 hours on -the-job training and 144 hours of related instruction. Applications are accepted once a year during the first two weeks of April at the training site. Apprentices are trained on-the-job and in the classroom in Munhall, PA.
As a Cement Mason apprentice, you will receive instruction on some of the following:
- Construction Safety
- Blueprint reading
- Designing concrete mixes
- Forming, Hand, and Finishing Tools
- Placing and leveling concrete
- Edge forms on grade
- On-grade curb and curb-and-gutter forms
- Curing and protection
- First Aid/CPR Training
Qualification Requirements Of The Program
- Be at least 18 at the time of acceptance into the program
- Have a high school diploma or GED
- Have a valid driver’s license
- Reside within the jurisdiction of Cement Masons Local Union #526 (33 counties of Western Pennsylvania)
- Have dependable transportation
- Good physical condition, manual dexterity, eye-arm coordination
- Pass a drug test – drug use is not tolerated in the construction industry, where safety is a life and death issue
- Qualify on aptitude test administered by the PA Employment Service
- Personal interview
- Union initiation fees and dues
- Applications are available April – May
